Chapter 1
Book 2: A New Heir to the Alpha
SCARLETT
Three months had passed since Joshuaâs assault and challenge. Three months since Christopher had been swamped with meetings, countless visits to the council, and frequent trips to what was once the southern territory, now ours. Despite his busy schedule, Christopher always found time for me, for us.
I was now fifteen weeks pregnant, and our baby, Anthony, was developing well. Even though my mother hadnât confirmed it yet, I was certain he was a boy. We had another ultrasound scheduled for this week.
I was beginning to immerse myself in Lunaâs responsibilities, but there couldnât be a more chaotic time than the merging of two packs to prepare for this role. I still clung emotionally to my work as a doctor at the hospital. Amid all the recent changes and the new meaning they brought to my life, my work was the only piece of the old Scarlett I still held onto in my new reality.
Now, I was a mother-to-be, the alphaâs wife, and the Lunaâs role was my real job.
Christopher and I had agreed that I would continue to see patients at the hospital, but I would no longer work shifts. Today, the appointments ran longer than usual, and I was coming home late. I entered through the entrance that led directly to our room.
It was still strange to think that I was living in the pack house. The names still intimidated me a bit. When I reached our room, Christopher wasnât there. I glanced at the clock; it was already 9 p.m., and he was usually home by this time.
I descended the other staircase to the kitchen, which connected to the living room and the meeting room. I peered through the wooden railing, but there was no sign of him. I headed to the kitchen and went straight to the fridge to pour myself a glass of juice.
Thatâs when I heard the living room door open.
I turned around, and Christopherâs scent filled my nostrils just as I saw him drape his jacket over one of the armchairs.
âHey,â I greeted, leaning against the kitchen counter and sipping my juice, my gaze fixed on him. I loved this view, and I never tired of seeing him return home from work, his face lighting up when he saw me.
âHey,â he replied, walking toward me. âDid you just get back from the hospital?â Christopher asked, taking the glass from my hands and taking a sip.
He then leaned against the counter behind me, pulling me close until our lips met. I had been waiting all day for thisâthe feel of his skin against mine, the warmth of his body enveloping me, his lips on mine. It was my favorite place.
He was my favorite place, my home.
âYes. Did you get my message that I would be late?â I asked, pulling my face away slightly but keeping our bodies pressed together. âHow did you know I just got home?â
âI got your message, but youâre still in your scrubs,â he said, glancing down.
My eyes followed his. âYeah, that makes sense,â I responded, laughing.
âYouâre not getting too tired, are you?â His question was accompanied by a penetrating gaze, the vast blue of his eyes making it impossible for me to lie or deny anything.
I wanted to say no, that I was fine, but the truth was that I knew I would have to give up medicine to fully embrace my role as luna. This realization both thrilled and terrified me. I looked away, but he gently lifted my chin, forcing me to meet his gaze.
He read me like an open book, as if he could see into my soul. âScarlett,â he said slowly, almost slurring the lett. I needed to tell the truth, but I didnât know what to say.
âIâm fine, Christopher. I just⊠I need to rest now andâŠâ
âYou promised me,â he said, his gaze still locked on mine. âYou promised me that when it started affecting your health, or you, or the pregnancy, you would step back.â
âIâm just not ready yet,â I confessed in a rush, pulling away from him and turning my back to him.
âScarlett,â he said again, his hands on my shoulders. I still had my back to him, and he let out a deep sigh. I felt the warmth of his breath on the back of my neck.
âI just want you both to be okay,â he said, his hands moving from my waist to my belly. I felt his body press against mine from behind, and I relaxed into his embrace. My head rested on his chest, giving me enough space to look up at him.
âIâm just tired, but I promise itâs not getting to me,â I said, and he looked at me, his gaze skeptical.
âAll right, letâs go upstairs. Iâm tired too,â Christopher said, kissing my cheek and slowly releasing me.
He then scooped me up, throwing me over his shoulder.
âChristopher,â I protested, but he just laughed and carried me up the stairs.
He opened the door and set me down, making me laugh. I was tired and wanted to change into my pajamas and lie down. I took off my scrubs, but when I unclasped my bra, I let out a sigh of relief.
My breasts had grown significantly in the past few weeks. It was normal, I knew, but my bras were tight, and the relief I felt when I took them off was immense. I ran my hands over the soft skin of my breasts, celebrating the freedom from discomfort.
I barely noticed when he approached from behind and held them too, his hands over mine.
My body shivered at his touch, and a smile spread across my lips as I closed my eyes to savor the sensation. His body enveloped mine, and his warmth comforted me.
âDidnât you say you were tired?â I teased.
âIâm never too tired for you,â he said, pressing his hips against mine.

I wasnât sure if it was the hormones, the anticipation of seeing him all day, or just the sheer intensity of us, but every touch sent sparks through me, leaving me aching for more. He was patient, lavishing attention on me, sucking, kissing, biting, before moving to my other breast, ensuring it received the same treatment. The world spun, my breath hitched, and I knew this was exactly what I needed. Christopher started slow, each thrust calculated and deliberate. But gradually, he picked up the pace, the heat in my belly growing until I knew I was on the brink.

âGood morning.â Christopherâs voice was thick with sleep. âWe have a meeting in forty minutes. Come on, letâs get up and have some coffee before we start.â
I groaned, pulling the sheets up over my head. I wanted nothing more than to stay in bed, but I knew I had to get up. We managed to squeeze in a quick cup of coffee before the meeting, but I was still exhausted. I felt worse than when I pulled double shifts at the hospital, and speaking of which, I still had to go in after lunch.
The meeting was with two representatives from the council. They were wrapping up their own internal investigations, but with Rufusâs death, it was easier to clean house. Our entire administration was present, and we were discussing the upcoming pack union ceremony and how to ensure it was as peaceful as possible.
At first, I was able to keep up, but as the meeting dragged on, my focus started to wane.
My vision blurred. Their lips were moving, but I couldnât make out what they were saying. I leaned back in my chair, closing my eyes for just a moment.
âScarlett.â The voice was familiar, barely above a whisper.
âScarlett, are you sleeping?â
I opened my eyes slowly, finding everyone in the meeting staring at me. I blinked twice, my gaze landing on Christopher at the end of the table. His teeth were clenched, and he shook his head, sighing.
Damn, I had fallen asleep during the meeting.
