“Oh, bloody hell, Maggie! Are you okay?” she heard Liam ask.
She cried as she looked over and saw Brett coming over from the stands to her. Liam was on his knees next to her with a worried expression on his face.
“Darling, answer me! Are you okay? Where are you hurt?” Liam asked urgently.
“What is it with you running into me?” she asked through her tears.
“I’m so sorry, darling! I was trying to get the ball and I didn’t see you! I’m so sorry!”
Brett jogged out to Maggie and picked her up like she was nothing. “Come on, Mags. I think we are visiting the Urgent Care, babe.”
Liam followed them off the field and to Brett’s car. Makayla got to the car, worried.
“Mak, I am fine. Stay and get something to eat with the team. You need it. Brett or I will call you with an update.”
Makayla reluctantly agreed. Brett got her buckled in as Liam pulled up behind in his car, insisting that he follow along. Brett pulled out and took Maggie to the nearest Urgent Care.
“Can you believe that guy?” Maggie hissed at him through gritted teeth after he took a pothole too fast.
“Liam? What’s wrong with Liam?”
“Do you know him?”
“Yes, that’s my buddy from college that I talk about all the time. You haven’t met him yet for some reason. Every time I had an event at the club or a party, you were never there at the same time.
“Mike and Makayla have met him. He’s a great guy, isn’t he?”
“Please tell me you are joking!”
“No, Maggie. He’s my best friend, besides you and Mak. Why?”
“He’s the jackass that ran into me and knocked me in the puddle!”
Brett laughed. “Really? He told me about the woman he knocked over. He said he bought you a new phone though.”
“So? He ruined my favorite green silk dress!”
“But didn’t he say he was going to try and help you? He is a brilliant attorney. Mags, if anyone can help you, he can.”
“You mean to say that the roommate you talked about all the time while you were in college was Liam Olsen? Your favorite drinking buddy and wingman is in the car behind us?”
Brett swallowed guiltily, remembering some of the stuff he had told them. “Yeah…try not to hold that against us. We were young, stupid, and drinking…”
“We’ll talk about this later!” she said, trying to breathe deeply through the pain.
Brett parked and helped her out of the car as Liam came running in behind them. Luckily, they were not busy and brought Maggie back to an exam room quickly.
The doctor checked her out and ordered an x-ray and a nurse to come in to clean up the scrapes on her legs and arm.
While the doctor and nurse were checking out Maggie, Liam and Brett were in the waiting room, talking.
“So, the woman you have been fantasizing over the last two days is Maggie? My Maggie?”
“How the bloody hell was I supposed to know it was your Maggie? I haven’t met her in all this time, which still blows my mind!”
“I know, but I am going to warn you now, that if you hurt her in any way, I will have to beat the shit out of you.”
Liam sighed. “I know, mate. I get it. But I can’t stop thinking about her! She is constantly on my mind, and I feel different. She is unlike anyone I have ever met.”
“That she is. You know what she’s been through in the past month, what that asshole and our former friend did to her. If you can find them, I get first crack at them. Seriously, Liam, don’t hurt her. Please…”
“I promise, Brett…”
They talked a few more minutes before the nurse said they could come in. They saw her sitting on the examination table, with scrapes and bandages all over her legs and a large one on her right elbow.
The doctor was putting the final touches on the temporary cast for her left arm.
“Come back on Saturday morning for a final cast. Don’t get it wet, keep this elevated and rest. Let your body heal, okay?”
Maggie nodded her head, wincing as he adjusted the sling. When the doctor left to print her discharge instructions, the tears spilled out.
“Brett, what am I going to do? I can’t work for you now, and I won’t be able to make rent! And I can forget about eating anything other than ramen for the next two weeks!”
Brett came over and hugged her as best as he could despite her injuries.
Liam felt terrible and so guilty. He knew it was an accident but still couldn’t help it. He wanted nothing more than to take this lovely creature in his arms and kiss her until she felt better.
“Maggie I am so sorry! What can I do to help?”
She moved her head and looked at him. “Liam, I really wouldn’t trust you to help me cross the room!
“In the last week, you have given me more bruises, scratches, and broken bones than I have had in my entire life to this point! You are bad luck for me!”
Brett chuckled. “I think that’s a bit harsh, Mags. They were both accidents. You should let him help you.”
“I said he could take the case, what more is there to do?”
He kissed her forehead as Liam spoke, “Please let me help you, Maggie. It would mean a lot to me.”
Before she could respond, the doctor came back in with her papers and permitted Brett to drive her home.
They were all hungry at this point and agreed that Liam could take her home and Brett would go get them food and bring it back to her place.
