Chapter 1: The Incident
Sebastian
I am on border control around near the lake edge. The lake is a shared boundary where no pack territory claims dominance. Max was supposed to be here, but I see him chatting with one girl at the lake, who is staying in one of our lowest cabins closest to the lake. We have several cabins spread throughout our range.
The Greystone Ridge Pack is one of the largest packs in the area. For years it has dominated the surrounding packs, but there has been a lot of tension since Alpha Robert took over the neighboring pack; The Red River Pack.
His head spun around to where I stood in wolf form, Tao’s fur bristling. I kept myself hidden from human view.
“Alpha Hawk told you to watch the border, not chat up the girls.” I was grumpy.
It was the end of our mating season, and I hadn’t found my mate. Later this year I’d be turning 28, and for any wolf that is getting old to find your mate. We had a specific time of the year where several unmated wolves would meet up at a gathering in the area. It was still possible to find your mate at unexpected times, and they usually did. I’ve heard of mates meeting in a battle before.
I watched from the edge of the forest and waited for him to arrive. When he did, he stripped his shorts off and hid them, then changed into his wolf.
We carried on our duties for the rest of the week. The ache of not finding my mate was a constant throb, but I tried to push it down, to ignore the hollowness it created. I’m sat in my room when the call came in.
“Fuck!” I ran out of the pack house and changed into my wolf, Tao.
By the time I reached the lake, I noticed everyone was on the far side, near the Red River Pack. As I got closer, I saw Max covered in blood, and another guy from The Red River Pack. A bloody body lay beneath Hawk, the chilling reality settling over me as I noted the stillness of the form and the gruesome gash across the chest.
I changed and stood next to Alpha Hawk. He was cursing and pissed off. “What happened?” I asked him.
Beta Alex appeared, and he shook his head. “I told you to stay away from the girl!” He shouted at the youngster.
“It wasn’t my fault. She wanted me.” He wiped his bloody nose.
“Max?” I growled out since Alpha Hawk was still trying to work out what to do.
“She said she loved me. We had sex this morning, and then—” He gritted his teeth. “Then I found her fucking him.”
“She got in the way.” The other kid snapped back.
“Who turned first?” Alpha Hawk bellowed.
“I did.” Max hung his head down.
“I’m going to have to report this to the authorities.” Alpha Hawk glared at Max. “Sebastian, take Max back and I’ll deal with him later. Beta Alex, I’m sorry this happened.”
I knew Hawk was trying to keep the peace. It had been difficult with Alpha Robert, as he was always drunk and didn’t control his pack. I led Max away, and we changed into our wolves to run back to the pack house.
Having to get the authorities out, we claimed it was a wild animal attack. A warning would be issued, and it could cause a decrease in travelers and people staying in our cabins.
Alpha Hawk gathered everyone outside. “We were lucky they didn’t shut us down. The attack was too close to the cabins. From now on, I forbid anyone from going near the humans. We continue running the cabins, but anyone unauthorized will not be allowed near them. All youngsters will be accompanied by an adult until I see fit and that they can be trusted. Max has brought shame on this pack; therefore, he is serving his punishment in the dungeon. I don’t want to see anyone near him.”
He quickly scanned the contents of his pack; then Luna Star gently took his hand, placing her other hand on his chest in a calming gesture.
“Our pack has been peaceful for several years, and we are lucky that Alpha Robert didn’t start a feud with us. This could have violated our peace treaty with the Red River Pack. Our aim is to grow the expansion of the treaties further afield, something that is in discussion with the council. This will also help with the mating season gathering.”
With that, Alpha Hawk finished and headed back inside. I followed him and we sat in his office. “Did the council say anything about the attack?” I sat down opposite him.
He pulled Luna onto his lap and nuzzled her neck. “The council is not happy. They wanted to put an exclusion on our pack. They even said that they would have to consider another alpha to run this pack. I had to assure them that it was an isolated incident between two young wolves. We (Alpha Robert and I) took disciplinary action to stop further incidents. Not that Alpha Robert was at the hearing.” His wolf growled from inside of him.
“They wouldn’t do that, would they? Replace you? This is your pack, was your fathers.”
“I told them my pack wouldn’t stand for it. They had no choice but to let the incident slide.”
I breathed a sigh of relief. “What about the mating gatherings?” I was concerned that they would put a stop to those as well.
Luna Star placed her hand on the desk. “I know you are desperate to find your mate, Sebastian. But the Moon Goddess has someone for us all. It is just a matter of timing.” She smiled sweetly. “One day Sebastian, and she is going to be so special, I can feel it.”
With a grateful nod, I left them both as I contemplated about my future mate. I had to hope that one day she would walk into my life.
“Sebastian,” the seductive voice of Sabrina purred next to me. Her fingers ran up over my chest. She was the pack slut and would sleep with anyone, but she had a thing for me in particular. “I’m going to let my wolf go for a run. Do you want to join me?” She pulled her top off, exposing her breasts. Then she pulled her leggings off. I could smell her arousal.
The proposal of a quick fuck would thrill any man. But I looked at her and every part of me said no. I turned away from her.
“You can’t deny me every time, Sebastian.” She was behind me and grabbed my shorts and pulled them down. “Don’t you feel the pull, Sebastian? I want you. I’ve always wanted you.” She grabbed my cock.
I growled at her and pushed her away. “There is no connection between us. I have a mate out there somewhere.” My wolf Tao howled in agreement as I pulled up my shorts, clearly not affected by her advances.
“How many years will it be, Sebastian? You are not getting any younger, and who said you couldn’t have fun whilst you wait?” She smirked and tried to advance on me again.
“The Moon Goddess has blessed me. It is just a matter of time until I meet her.” I gritted my teeth and snarled at her.
She purred and ran her finger down my chest. “Oh, Sebastian, we both know once we mate you will feel it.” She bared her neck at me.
I was at my breaking point with her. A forced mating with someone you don’t want, is set to be doomed from the start. My heart ached as I clutched at the dwindling possibility of ever finding my mate. I had to believe that she was out there, and one day I would meet her.
Sabrina huffed in anger. “You will regret turning me down, Sebastian.” With that, she stormed off, leaving me wondering what the fuck she would do if I found my mate.
