Prologue
The heat of the fire warmed his skin, making the hairs on his forearms tingle. The acrid smoke filled his nostrils, and his lungs began to burn.
The building’s windows were all aglow from the flames burning within, and he was standing too close to it, in an alley behind, which hadn’t been blocked off by the emergency crews already on-site. The firefighters were working to extinguish the fire and to make sure everybody got out.
He, too, had to make sure that everybody was safe, that nobody suffered because of him. Because this was his fault.
He hadn’t set this fire, hadn’t started the hotel burning, but every place he’d stayed had had some malfunction—something that led to a fire. To devastation...
But not to what it was supposed to have led to...
His death.
That was what this fire was meant to have caused. When was the Camorra going to give up its quest for revenge? His exposé had led to several arrests—of people within their organization as well as of people in governments and legal authorities that had helped them conduct their business.
Those arrests should have weakened the Camorra in Naples, but enough of them must have remained free. Or maybe they were conducting their business yet from behind bars.
He knew they would not be done with him until he was dead. They would keep trying, keep tracking him down, as they had at every place he’d hidden.
Was there any place he could go where he’d finally be safe—where other people’s lives wouldn’t be put at risk just for being near him?
