Chapter One
Book 3: When Love Comes Around
MEGAN
Hearing my bedroom door slowly creak open, I pull my soft orange comforter up over my head in preparation to block out the impending light.
âCome on, Megan. Time to get up,â Gina calls out in a singsong voice.
âNo, Mommy. I donât want to go to school today,â I mumble from underneath my blanket haven.
I hear her open the blinds, but itâs no use. I am prepared for this maneuver.
âFirst of all, itâs Saturday,â Gina reminds me. âSecond of all, if it were a weekday, youâd have to go to school because youâre the teacher. And third of allââ
She whips the covers off me, immediately gasping in shock.
âMEGAN,â Gina screeches, covering her eyes. âYOUâRE NAKED!â
Getting up slowly from the bed, with no shame, I reach above my head, closing my eyes, stretching, and yawning.
I slowly open my eyes to see my other best friend, Evelynn, and her brother, Trevor, standing at my bedroom door. Evelynn looks as shocked as Gina.
Trevor is standing with his arms crossed, leaning against the doorframe, with a devilish grin on his face.
âGood morning,â I greet them. âIf you wouldnât mind, Iâm going to get dressed now. Unless, of course, you care to join me.â
Trevor takes a step into the room, and Evie quickly grabs him by the wrist, pulling him into the living room of mine and Ginaâs small apartment.
Gina quickly shuts the door behind them, remaining inside with me.
âReally, Megan?â she admonishes, arms crossed over her chest, a stern look of disapproval on her face.
âWhat? You came in here pulling the covers off me,â I remind her, hands on my hips.
âHave you no shame?â she quietly chastises.
I toss my long red hair over my shoulder.
I look down at my five-foot-five frame, from my perky b-cup-sized breasts to my flat stomach and ample hips. I look back up at Gina.
âNope, not even a little. Should I?â I challenge with an arched brow.
âNo.â She sighs. Conceding, Gina smiles at me. âYouâre beautiful, but canât you, at least, pretend to be a little modest sometimes?â
âNo,â I reply flatly.
âI wouldnât have walked out into the living room naked had I known we had company. But you brought them to me. I canât help it that you decided to snatch the covers from my naked body.
âYouâre right, Iâm sorry,â Gina apologizes.
I smile to myself. Sheâs so malleable.
âNo biggie. So, whatâs going on, whereâs the fire?â I ask, rifling through my dresser drawers, looking for some clothes to put on.
âTrevor came in last night. He took two weeks of leave for the holidays. Remember? The idea was for the guys to use this time to get the fittings for their tuxes and figure out their game plan for the bachelor party.
âUs girls are supposed to check out venues, dresses, flowers, and do cake tastings. Starting today,â Gina says.
âSounds like the guys get the easy part. Canât I go with them?â I whine.
âYouâre the maid of honor, Megan,â Gina replies.
âWho came up with that stupid idea?â I ask, pulling on a pair of skintight jeans, a black cowl-necked sweater, and high-heeled leather boots.
âYou. As a matter of fact, you practically demanded to be the maid of honor,â Gina comments.
âUgh, why you gotta bring up old shit?â I roll my eyes, teasing her. âLet me just brush my teeth and hair, and Iâll be out in a second.â
Gina knows Iâm just messing with her. She exits the room, leaving me in peace, as I walk into my master bath to finish getting ready.
Honestly, I donât know why I wanted to be the maid of honor.
Maybe itâs the part of me that likes to feel important. Iâm not in denial about who I am. Iâm loud-mouthed, bold, sometimes crass, beautiful, and unapologetic about it. What I am not is a romantic sap.
So why play the part of the caring, doting, overly involved maid of honor? Because, although Iâm not a sucker for the romantic kind of love, I do have a deep love for my two best friends, Evelynn Woods, and Regina Santos.
Evelynn is getting married to the man sheâs loved most of her life, and I want a front-row seat.
I wonder how Trevor feels about the wedding. Evie is his little sister and Hunter is his best friend.
I suppose you couldnât ask for a better setup than thatâas long as they stay together. Iâve only met Trevor a handful of times, but from what Iâve heard, heâs a ladiesâ man.
Like me, he probably doesnât buy into all this mushy-gushy romance crap either.
Trevor is absolutely edible.
He is about six foot three. He has brown skin, a shade or two darker than Evieâs. He has soft brown eyes and a lean muscular frame kept in shape by the military. What he does in the military, I have no clue.
I know Evieâs fiancĂ©, Hunter, was a field medic, and now that heâs out of the army, heâs a paramedic at Memorial Hospital.
But in all this time, no one has ever mentioned what Trevor does in the military, which makes him even more intriguing.
Iâm not sure if Evelynn would be upset if I slept with her brother.
Dating him is out of the questionâI donât do relationships. So far, Iâve kept my distance, out of respect for my best friend. But, if Trevor ever makes the first moveâŠ
âFor crying out loud, Megan, are you ready yet?â Evie shouts from the other side of the bedroom door.
âYep. Letâs get this party started,â I announce, dramatically flinging the bedroom door open and sauntering out.
