Chapter 1: I Couldnât Stay Away

The moment the car pulled away, my heart felt like it was being torn in two. I dropped to my knees, struggling to deal with the pain.
Tao took control, his strength overwhelming my mind. His paws pounded the forest floor as we raced alongside the car, staying out of sight. But not from Alice.

âAlpha Kyle Black spotted Dravenâs men near their territory last night. Heâs keeping a close eye on them.â
His gaze was intense. It wasnât often that Hawk made me feel uneasy, but this was serious.
âIâm sending four of our men up there; Alpha Alex is sending two of his best. The council has called a meeting in three days, and youâre not focused.
âIâm sorry, being away from Alice is harder than I thought it would be.â
I knew it was going to be tough, but the constant ache in my heart was unbearable, and the rest of me was filled with sadness.
Hawk let out a heavy sigh.
âI need you focused and by my side at this council meeting. Everyone else has their duties and Iâve given Josh the responsibility of running the cabins.â Hawkâs glare was intense.

âYouâve been doing such a poor job, heâs been double-checking your work.â His sharp eyebrow raise made me sink into my seat.
âI canât explain whatâs happening in my head. Iâm losing my mind. I canât stop thinking about her ancestors. Have her parents been hiding things from her?â
I hadnât been able to share my worries with Hawk since that night at his place.
He hummed to himself and tapped his fingers on his desk. âPack a bag, go see Alice, then come back in two days so we can plan our moves for the council meeting.â He leaned back in his chair, fingers linked behind his head.
âI need you by my side. Maybe this will help. Youâre going to have to get used to being without her for short periods of time, but I know there are some things you need to find out about her ancestors.â
It was like he was reading my mind.
âTwo days.â My heart started to beat again.
Tao lifted his head. âHopefully youâll find the answers youâre looking for. Come back clear-headed.â
He was a great leader and alpha. âOh, and SebastianâŠlet me know.â
âI will, Alpha, thank you.â I nodded in appreciation. I couldnât get out of there fast enough.
The engine hummed as I pressed harder on the accelerator. Alice said it took them just over four hours. Iâd make it in three.
