In Love with Mr. Mafia

Chapter 4: Mistake

I walked downstairs to see an empty house. I opened my mouth to call for my parents when I remembered they were gone again.

I pulled out my phone and pulled up my mother’s contact before hitting call.

I listened as it rang, and finally, my mother’s ridiculous voicemail that was drilled into my head at this point started to talk—typical.

I numbly picked up my car keys and made sure to lock up behind me. I drove to school in silence and barely paid attention to my surroundings.

I was used to being alone, but what I just went through that made us move here in the first place had me thinking things would be different—maybe even they would be different.

I parked in a different parking spot and numbly walked into the building.

I walked straight into my half-empty classroom and sat down in the far back, on the opposite side of where I knew Alessandro and Giovanni would sit.

Alessandro and Giovanni walked into the room together minutes after the second bell rang.

My eyes locked on Giovanni’s, and I bit my lip as he turned his head and went back to talking to Alessandro about whatever they were talking about.

Giovanni walked to his seat while Alessandro came and sat beside me.

“What?” I asked, crossing my arms over my chest.

“Why are you sitting by yourself?” Alessandro asked.

“No reason,” I lied with a shrug. I didn’t want to tell him about what happened a year and two months ago.

I didn’t want to tell him that I was terrified to be in a house alone so I was shutting down.

Alessandro squinted and studied my face.

“Mm-hmm. Well, why didn’t you wait for me and the boys this morning?” Alessandro asked.

“Didn’t know we were going to drive together again,” I said with a shrug.

“Why didn’t you park in Gio’s parking spot?” Alessandro asked, crossing his arms over his chest.

“For that exact reason—it’s Giovanni’s,” I said softly.

“That never stopped you before,” Alessandro said suspiciously.

“I’m okay,” I said, turning to the front.

“Was it Gio?” Alessandro asked.

“No. He didn’t do anything. He was—is great. I’ll be fine, don’t worry about me,” I said softly.

Alessandro opened his mouth to speak, but the teacher cleared her throat, catching everybody’s attention and cutting him off.

I took a deep breath as we started to take notes. I had to get myself together. I was used to being alone, and besides, ~he ~was missing and there was no way he would find me here.

I closed my eyes and reassured myself, and just like that, I was back. I smiled and joked with Alessandro throughout the rest of class, actually forgetting what was bothering me earlier.

Finally, after class, it was time for lunch.

“I’ll meet you there,” I said to Alessandro as I started to walk toward my locker.

“Okay,” he said with a nod. Ever since Alessandro and I locked eyes this morning, he hadn’t bothered to look or talk to me.

As I turned the corner to where my locker was, I hesitated in my steps as I noticed Malibu Barbie locking lips with some boy.

I shrugged and rolled my eyes as I began to walk toward my locker. I groaned internally as I realized they were sucking each other’s faces off right in front of it.

I cleared my throat, but neither of them moved.

“Excuse me,” I said, tapping the boy’s shoulder. They finally broke apart, but I instantly regretted bothering them when icy blue eyes met mine.

“What do you want?” Malibu Barbie asked. I turned to face her, only to see a victorious smirk on her face. I stepped back and shook my head, meeting Giovanni’s eyes again.

“Nothing—sorry for bothering you,” I said, feeling tears brim my eyes.

Giovanni turned his head away as a sole tear ran down my cheek. I turned around and started walking quickly toward the cafeteria.

I angrily wiped the tears off my cheeks and halted when I heard my name being called from behind me. I didn’t bother turning back. I mean, I already knew who it was.

He stepped in front of me and tried to reach for my hand, but I snatched it away from him and kept my eyes trained on the ground.

I wasn’t crying because I was sad, but more because I was hurt and felt stupid.

“I’m sorry. I-I don’t really know what to say,” Giovanni said, reaching for my hand again.

I took a step back and scoffed. “Why? It’s not like we were together—it was just a mistake,” I said, looking up at him.

I saw hurt flash through his eyes, but it left as soon as it came. I watched as he put on his usual blank face and shrugged.

“Yeah, I guess you’re right,” he said, shoving his hands in his pockets. I nodded once in response and walked around him to continue my journey to the cafeteria.

I sat beside Alessandro who was sitting outside with the rest of the boys. I smiled at Dimitri and Lorenzo and watched as Giovanni walked into the cafe and looked around for us.

He finally spotted us, and I turned my head to face the boys again.

“What happened?” Alessandro asked when he noticed I was barely paying attention to him anymore.

“Nothing,” I said with a blank expression.

Alessandro opened his mouth to respond but quickly shut it as Giovanni sat down at the only available seat. Unlucky for me, it was right next to me.

I scooted closer to Alessandro and kept the same blank expression on my face.

“Where were you?” Dimitri asked.

“Bathroom,” Giovanni lied.

I scoffed and rolled my eyes. The boys looked at me confused while he avoided looking at me.

“Che succede con lei?” Lorenzo asked. (What’s wrong with her?)

“Mi ha visto con Brittany,” Gio responded. (She saw me with Brittany.)

I had no idea what they were talking about, but I could only guess they were talking about what happened in the hallway.

Alessandro stood up and took my hand in his. He pulled me up so I was standing and started leading me away from the table.

“Where are you taking me?” I asked as I turned and waved to Dimitri and Lorenzo. Giovanni stared at mine and Alessandro’s hands with a cold look on his face, which I obviously ignored.

I turned back around as I let him pull me.

“I heard what happened with Brittany,” he said, stopping in front of my locker. I guessed Brittany was the name of Malibu Barbie. I bit my lip and nodded.

“I’ll get over it,” I said, brushing it off like it was nothing.

He studied my face and ran a hand through his hair. “This is all my fault. I shouldn’t have asked him to ask you on a date,” he said solemnly.

I took a step back in shock and took a deep breath before speaking. “You asked him to take me on a date?” I asked slowly.

“Yes,” he said sheepishly.

“Did you also ask him to kiss me?” I asked.

“No. That was all him, I swear,” he said, taking a step closer to me.

“Why—why would you ask him to ask me on a date?” I asked.

“I saw the way you guys looked at each other,” he said.

“You mean with pure anger?” I joked.

“Do you remember when we first talked?” he asked.

“Yes, when I got out the shower and started to play music,” I said with a nod.

“And when you stood up to him in the parking lot?” he asked.

“Yes,” I said.

“After you walked away, he actually smiled. He wouldn’t pay attention to anything we were saying, and when you stood up to him he couldn’t get that out of his head,” he said.

I looked up as the bell rang and then looked back at him.

“Well, all of that didn’t matter in the end. Did it?” I asked as we began to walk to class.

“Something seems off about this,” he said, following closely behind me.

“What do you mean?” I asked softly.

“Nothing,” he said, giving me a fake smile. We stopped in front of the classroom since we were early by like a minute and waited outside the door.

I turned around to face Alessandro, and we talked and laughed as we waited for the teacher. He looked past my head at something, and I turned to see what he was looking at.

The hall was empty now, other than the line waiting for the teacher to open the door. Giovanni was walking toward us, and I wasn’t ready to face him.

I opened the classroom door and stepped inside to see the teacher’s bleeding body on the ground. I couldn’t help it—I screamed and screamed and screamed some more.

I stepped back and bumped into a chest. I turned around to see Gio behind me. Other students began to walk into the classroom and started to take pictures of the body.

He wrapped his arms around me and pulled me into him as hot tears ran down my cheek. As students began to push their way through, he grabbed my hand and started to lead me outside.

He sat me down in his car and called somebody on his phone.

“I have her. I need one of you to take her car to my house,” he said. As soon as he said that, my eyes snapped to my car, and I felt my heart crack.

I slowly opened his car door and started to walk toward my car, with him following closely behind me.

“No,” I whispered in disbelief as I moved to the front of my car.

“‘Stay away from him. —B,’” he read off the hood of my car.

I turned to see his face go hard. He began to storm toward the school, and I ran in front of him to stop him.

“Move, Luna,” he growled.

“No,” I said softly.

“How are you not pissed?” he asked, crossing his arms over his chest.

“It’s just a car,” I lied. It was just a car, but somebody that I may never get to see again gave it to me, and that was all I had to remember them by.

But that person also wouldn’t have wanted me to resort to violence. Revenge maybe, but definitely not violence.

“Luna—” he started.

“It’s fine, I can just wash it off or something,” I said with a shrug.

He studied my face cautiously before slowly nodding his head. “Okay,” he said as he took me back to his car.

I sat down in the passenger seat and rested my head against the window as he pulled out of the school’s parking lot and started driving.

As I watched the trees going past, I could feel myself falling asleep. I took a deep breath before I completely fell asleep.
