Chapter 2

WALKER

When Kel asked me to pick up her new writer, I wasn’t sure what to expect. At first, I was irritated. I didn’t really have time for that. I knew she was in a bind, though. So, of course, I helped her.

Once Harper showed up at the top of the escalator, I instantly recognized her. It wasn’t just the description, but her innocent appearance didn’t match that of a local.

I have to admit, when she looked to see if I was staring at her, I felt a slight physical reaction. When she realized who I was, my cock did more than just twitch at the blush that spread across her face. I was instantly curious to find out what other things could make her blush like that.

I shook that feeling off. Harper didn’t look like a one-night stand type of woman. All I did was have one-night stands, and I wasn’t going to spoil this for my sister. She believed in Harper. She thought this movie had what it took to become a big hit. I wouldn’t get in the way of that. I pushed the idea of sleeping with Harper out of my thoughts.

I decided to go to the lobby and see if I had any mail. It was typically held for me at the reception desk. On the ride down, I remembered how Harper did all she could not to look at me. It was fucking adorable.

Damn it! No, I’m not going to think about her. What the hell is wrong with me?

As I walked toward the front desk, the new receptionist’s face lit up with a smile. She was pretty, tan, with fake tits and a little too much makeup. Just the kind of person I’d consider taking home after partying at the club. But I maintained professional boundaries with my employees and did not sleep with them. Plus, after seeing Harper, this new chick wasn’t doing it for me. I shook my head. I’d just met Harper!

What the hell is wrong with me? I asked myself for the second time within five minutes.

“Mr. Donovan. What can I do for you?” Fake tits bent so far forward, she wasn’t even hiding the fact she was hitting on me.

“Do I have any mail?”

“Let me check.”

She quickly walked to the back, swaying her hips a little too vigorously. She came back with a small stack. She handed the mail over, but when I grabbed it, she didn’t let go.

“Is there anything else I can do for you?” She winked.

I acted like I had no idea what she meant. “No. That’ll be all.”

I tugged the envelopes out of her hand and watched her smile fade.

Was I an asshole? Usually. Did I mean to be? Not all the time. Could I take this chick in the back and fuck Harper out of my mind? Possibly.

I didn’t have time for that. I needed to get Harper to my sister before she flipped out on me. At least, that was what I told myself. The truth was, having sex with this woman didn’t appeal to me at all. That scared me enough to convince myself it was the time limit that kept me from doing it.

I went back up and knocked at Harper’s door. She somehow looked more beautiful now than a few minutes ago.

“Did you change or something?”

She blushed and looked down at herself. “No. Should I?”

“No. I was just curious.” I turned and walked to the elevator. I didn’t need to look back to know she was behind me.

The ride to the studio was quiet. I acted like I was on my phone, but in reality, I kept watching Harper out of the corner of my eye. I held back my smile as she looked in awe at the surroundings. Buildings and palm trees flew by. People ate on restaurant patios or walked around. It all looked normal to me. It was interesting to see her reaction. I couldn’t help but ask.

“First time in California?”

She jumped, almost as if she’d forgotten I was there.

“Yes. It looks so warm and inviting.”

I laughed.

“What?”

I shrugged. “You don’t have buildings, trees, or people where you live?”

She squinted at me but didn’t respond until she looked back out the window. She spoke so quietly, I barely heard her. “Not palm trees.”

My question came out ruder than I meant it. I wasn’t giving the best first impression. Good, then she wouldn’t want to be around me. I could drop her off with my sister and never see her again.

When we pulled into the lot, Kel was already waiting. She had been so excited for Harper to come. She was practically bouncing, and my sister didn’t bounce.

“Harper!” Kel walked up to shake her hand. “Kelli Ellis. I am so glad to finally meet you in person. I can’t wait to show you everything!” Then she gave me a look before continuing, “I hope my brother wasn’t too big of a pain.”

Harper gave a sweet smile. “Mr. Donovan has been very accommodating.”

“Oh god! He’s not making you call him Mr. Donovan, is he?” She punched me in the arm.

I rubbed it dramatically before responding. “Of course not.” Wait, did I? I can’t remember.

“Well, you don’t need to be that proper with him. You can call him Walker or Jackass, like I do.” Kel gave me the same look she did when we were kids. A look that said, “I’m older, and I dare you to challenge me.”

“Santo, can you show Harper around?” she yelled, then turned back to Harper. “Santo will take you around the lot. I just have to finish one thing, and I’ll catch up.”

Harper nodded politely and followed Kel’s assistant.

“Don’t!” She immediately turned and pointed at me once Harper was gone.

“What?”

“I know you. Leave her alone. I really like her and think we could do great work together. I don’t want you or your dick fucking it up.”

“Vulgar, Kel.” I jokingly looked at her, appalled. “She isn’t even my type.”

“No? Pretty, sweet, and smart. That’s not your type? Or is it the fact that she’s fully clothed?”

I practically spit out the water I was about to drink. I swallowed hard to keep it down. “Damn, Kelli, what crawled up your ass?”

She let out a deep breath before answering. “I just really want this to work.”

“It will. Everything will be great.”

She nodded. “Okay. And don’t forget about dinner this weekend.” She pointed to me as she walked away.

“Yes. I know, I know.”

My sister thought it would be a good idea to take Harper out for dinner, just to make her feel welcome. I’d told her I would tag along when she’d originally asked. I hadn’t been too excited about it. But now, I couldn’t wait!
