The King Without a Queen

5: Chapter 5

The fear that had gripped me began to dissipate as I noticed the pizza box in his hands. I glanced up at him, and his intense brown eyes sent a shiver down my spine. I quickly looked away.

“Umm...pizza?”

“Didn’t you order it?” he asked, his voice just as I remembered—deep and masculine.

My queen.

I shook my head, trying to clear my thoughts.

No, this guy is a creep. You can’t possibly be attracted to him.

I nodded. “Yeah!” My throat felt dry, and my voice came out rough. I cleared my throat, feeling a sudden shyness. “Yeah, I did.”

Why was I acting like a love-struck girl in front of him? It was as if his good looks had cast a spell on me, making me forget that I should be calling the police instead of blushing like a schoolgirl.

He leaned against the door frame, still holding the pizza box. His eyebrows arched perfectly.

Why did guys always have the eyebrows girls wanted? Mine were barely visible.

“Are you new here?” he asked, his gaze never leaving mine. I blinked.

Am I new here? No, I was born here. Just because I moved away doesn’t mean I’m new.

But I couldn’t shake the feeling that I didn’t belong here anymore.

“New? Not really...I mean, yeah. We just moved back recently. I’m Phoebe.” I mentally kicked myself for giving him my name.

Great! Now this creep knows my name and address. Should I just sign my name over to the reaper now?

“I’m Silvic. Nice to meet you.”

A strange sensation bloomed in my chest, as if I already knew his name. As if we had met before. I couldn’t pinpoint when, but I felt certain I had seen him before.

A forest. A wide lake. Whispers. Brown eyes staring back at me.

I blinked, trying to clear my mind.

What just happened?

My eyes flickered to Silvic’s, and they looked exactly like the pair I had just seen in my mind.

Okay, note to self: I really need to stay away from Silvic.

“Yeah. Me too,” I said, forcing my eyes away from his face. The emotions in my chest doubled when I looked at him, and I felt an overwhelming urge to do something, but I had no idea what. Restlessness consumed me.

You need to run.

My heart nearly stopped. That wasn’t my voice. My inner voice wasn’t so…masculine.

I tried to control my breathing and swallowed hard, attempting to ignore the thought that had just raced through my mind.

The voice sounded exactly like Silvic.

No.

I was going crazy. That was the only explanation. Or maybe I had just heard something.

“Did you say something?” I asked, panic evident in my voice.

Silvic looked calm, as if he had anticipated my outburst. “No. I didn’t.”

I blinked at the expression in his eyes—one of complete acceptance, as if he had just realized something and come to terms with it.

Mine.

I slammed the door in his face. The pizza could go to hell.

All I wanted was for that creep to leave me alone. I was certain I hadn’t imagined it—I had heard his voice in my head.

The powerful, masculine voice that had captivated me.

He was different from other guys. The way I felt compelled to bow my head and avert my eyes from his gaze.

I knew I needed to stay away from him, and I was determined to do so. My chest tightened painfully, and I sighed.

Maybe something was wrong with me.

I waited for a while, but he didn’t ring the bell again. I resolved not to open the door for anyone from now on.

Ugh, why does this feel like the beginning of a horror movie?

I shook off my thoughts, not wanting to scare myself any more than I already was.

I headed to my bedroom, my mind a whirlwind of thoughts. All I wanted was to snuggle under a blanket and forget about everything.

My stomach growled in protest, but I ignored it. I had never been one to skip a meal, but my appetite had vanished tonight.

I cursed him silently.

My goddamn pizza.
