Alpha Rylan may be the leader of the Purity Pack, but heโ€™s anything but pure. The day Dawn found out she was mated to the cruel alpha, she fled, and sheโ€™s been on the run with her sister ever since. When Rylan comes to her with a dealโ€”speak to him one last time and heโ€™ll stop pursuing herโ€”Dawn sees a way out. But then she finds herself unable to escape: trapped with the man she hates the most. Will she ever be able to rid herself of Rylan? And when the time comes will she want to?

Chapter One

Dawn

โ€œThis is becoming a habit, isnโ€™t it?โ€
The men form a half-circle around me, their eyes tracking my every move with caution.
Theyโ€™re trying to pretend their fingers arenโ€™t trembling on their weapons, their feet poised to retreat if necessary.
There used to be five of them, but Iโ€™ve managed to reduce their number to four. Purely by accident, of course.
The leader stands in the center, clutching a staff made of dark wood, its tip sharpened and a metal cuff at the base for grip.
Members of the Purity Pack donโ€™t believe in using firearms or even silver. But right now, I can tell heโ€™d love to break those rules and use such weapons against me.
โ€œKneel,โ€ he orders, his voice shaky despite his attempt at authority.
I canโ€™t help but roll my eyes at the predictability of his command. Commander Burke never brings any excitement to our encountersโ€”especially not recently.
As the leader of an elite force tasked with protecting the Purity Pack, heโ€™d probably rather be doing anything else than this; this being chasing a girl aimlessly through the woods.
โ€œAnd surrender,โ€ we both say simultaneously, causing him to scowl and me to laugh.
He glances at the three men heโ€™s brought along. I wonder if heโ€™s noticed the scar on the forehead of the man to his left. I certainly did... I was the one who gave it to him, after all.
It wouldnโ€™t have happened if heโ€™d just listened to me.
I hate it when they donโ€™t listen.
โ€œIs this the seventh time weโ€™ve done this dance?โ€ I ask, raising my hand with my fingers spread wide.
Commander Burkeโ€™s brow furrows, nearly hiding his almond-shaped eyes. He hates the banter. But I do it every time.
Sometimes it gets lonely, and to be honest, messing with Alpha Rylanโ€™s guards is a source of amusement for me.
โ€œWe wouldnโ€™t have to if youโ€™d just surrender,โ€ Burke grumbles, his grip on his weapon tightening. So predictable. Has he learned nothing?
He always does this when heโ€™s about to attack, as if he thinks he can catch me off guard. When he sees my raised eyebrow, heโ€™ll relax his grip.
I sigh. โ€œHavenโ€™t we established thatโ€™s not an option?โ€
One of the men at the edge of the group looks to his commander. I have no idea why he keeps coming along.
Every single time, he struts up full of confidence, but bolts the moment I make my move. Heโ€™s my favorite.
โ€œBelieve me, creature, we wouldnโ€™t be here if you werenโ€™t his mate,โ€ Burke says. Rylan wonโ€™t tell them my real name, so theyโ€™ve taken to calling me โ€˜creatureโ€™. I like it too much to correct them.
If I wasnโ€™t Rylanโ€™s mate, a lot of things would be different.
I wouldnโ€™t be on the run. I wouldnโ€™t be poor. My family wouldnโ€™t have disowned me and my sister.
I wouldnโ€™t spend every moment wondering when his guards might come crashing through the underbrush in pursuit of me.
I have to give him credit for his persistence... Itโ€™s been almost a year since we both found out. A year since Iโ€™ve been on the run.
I wonโ€™t, wonโ€™t live under his rules. I wonโ€™t believe in the goddess. And neither will my sister.
โ€œNor would we have to if you didnโ€™t stealโ€ฆโ€ Burke starts, but I cut him off with a glare. Iโ€™m tired of explaining myself. Stealing is a serious crime. So is murder.
I only committed one of those on purpose.
He shouldnโ€™t have thrown himself at me. He practically forced my hand.
โ€œYouโ€™re right,โ€ I say flatly. โ€œBut youโ€™re wasting your time chasing someone who isnโ€™t your alphaโ€™s precious good girl.โ€
Just then, one of his guards lunges at me. Iโ€™d been expecting it, actually. I thought it would have happened five minutes ago.
The way heโ€™d been eyeing me from behind his cloth mask gave him away.
Every so often, heโ€™d twitch as if he were about to attack, but then heโ€™d change his mind at the last second.
Iโ€™d already freed my weapon of choice from the tree behind me by the time he made his move.
A heavy rockโ€”I found it at the bottom of the local riverโ€”fits perfectly in my hand, ideal for throwing.
I prefer long-range weapons; it helps me sleep at night knowing I didnโ€™t get close enough to hurt him.
I donโ€™t even have to look at him as I hurl the rock into the air, aiming straight for his forehead.
It hits him, instantly knocking him out. As he collapses next to the rock, I quickly replace the flicker of guilt on my face with anger.
Anger at him.
A heavy silence falls over us, until Burke breaks it with a sigh. โ€œA rock, thatโ€™s new.โ€
Usually, I opt for a sharpened stick, like the ones they carry, but not as long or fancy. I tried a bone once, but it didnโ€™t hold up without proper treatment.
Thereโ€™s nothing fancy out here in the forest. Burke doesnโ€™t listen when I tell him itโ€™s an unfair advantage.
This isnโ€™t a game to him, like it is to me. Itโ€™s his job, which is why I take great pleasure in making it difficult.
Every time he drags injured men back to Rylan, I can imagine the consequences. Today wonโ€™t be any different.
โ€œHonestly, I think you need better men,โ€ I say, brushing my hands off on my pants. Theyโ€™re worn and tattered, but they do the job.
Burke rests the tip of his staff on the ground. โ€œHow about a bargain?โ€
My ears prick up at his words. Did he just suggest what I think he did? Burke and I have crossed paths in the forest many times, but heโ€™s never proposed anything like a deal before.
Itโ€™s always been the same old song and dance, so this new tune has me intrigued.
โ€œHe wants to talk to you... one last time,โ€ Burke says. โ€œThen heโ€™ll agree to let you go.โ€
My heart nearly skips a beat. Can he be serious? Burke is an older man, which makes him twice as stubborn as the young guys who usually flank him.
This must be tearing him up inside, knowing I might just walk away scot-free. The thought alone has me grinning from ear to ear.
โ€œInteresting,โ€ I reply, keeping my tone clipped. Iโ€™m not sure whether to trust him. โ€œAbout what?โ€
He shrugs, a gesture thatโ€™s out of character for someone of his stature. Even the two remaining boys look taken aback.
The blond one, whoโ€™s always looking for an escape route, still seems uneasy. Iโ€™m tempted to say โ€˜booโ€™ or something, just to give him an excuse to bolt.
I wouldnโ€™t mind an escape route myself, but I canโ€™t risk leading them back to my sister.
โ€œYou think Iโ€™m privy to that information? Youโ€™ll have to find out for yourself.โ€
โ€œGross,โ€ I mutter, recalling every other conversation Iโ€™ve had with him. Itโ€™s the same garbage, time and time again.
If I have to listen to that insufferable alpha one more time, I might just pull my hair out. Of all the people in the world who donโ€™t get me, itโ€™s him.
He honestly believes that keeping me cooped up within his packโ€™s territory will turn me into a docile little lamb. At least, that was his theory six months ago.
I havenโ€™t heard a peep from him since.
โ€œYou know what,โ€ I say, squaring my shoulders. โ€œIโ€™ll talk to him. If he tries anything, Iโ€™ll kill him.โ€
Thatโ€™s not an empty threat... well, maybe. Every time Iโ€™ve been near him, I havenโ€™t felt the urge, but things are different now. Iโ€™m stronger. Iโ€™m better.
Iโ€™m his personal fugitive. And I plan on keeping it that way.
