My heart hammered in my chest.
I was greedy for breath…
My lycan’s paws pounded hard against the grass, snapping twigs as I leaped over fallen trunks.
He won’t catch me.
I won’t let him.
I could hear his raspy panting right behind me. My muscles burned with every move forward, but I pushed myself faster and faster. I’d been training hard, but I knew his strength and power were superior to mine.
My front paws ached.

Go, Lycan! Why can’t you go any faster?

I was too far away from the palace now to turn back.

I skidded to a halt and turned to face the dark forest, shifting back into my naked human form.
I tensed, listening as the thundering sound of his paws approached like a tornado across a prairie.

But before my imagination could go wild, a giant lycan leaped forward from the shadows right toward me.
It was huge and terrifying. If I was a weaker woman, I would’ve started screaming and running for my life.
But I stood my ground and smiled.
The wolf, its golden coat glinting in the moonlight’s luminescence, shifted into his human form. He took me into his muscular arms.

I stared up at Adonis’s eyes. Both of us were panting naked in the moonlight.
His form was magnificent, a fine sheen of sweat clinging to his flesh.
I looked down.

His eyes glowed like orbs in the moon’s reflection, exciting me even more.
The thundering in my chest proved almost unbearable at the sight of him.
Now the majestic lycan had me right where he wanted me.
A chilly breeze swept the meadow.

“You cold?” he asked breathlessly.
I smirked, my fingers tracing his ridged abs and making their way down to the deep V below. “Not for long,” I teased in a faint voice.
He tensed his abs as I let my fingers dance over his V.
Releasing a small pant, I couldn’t help myself and grabbed the base of his shaft.

He noticed this and lifted me gently in his arms. “I’ll shift,” he breathed. “You can ride on my back. Relax.”
I smiled sleepily as I felt his smooth skin turn to fur. I slipped onto his back, half asleep as I held onto his coat while we made our way back slowly through the forest.

When I opened my eyes, I was back in the royal chamber, lying on our soft bed with rays of sunlight streaming through the blinds.
I guessed morning had arrived to pull me out of my drowsy slumber.
Adonis’s arm was curled possessively around my waist, reining me in tight toward him.

I smiled across at him. It was always so peaceful waking up next to him.
It’s almost as if I didn’t know what it was like before him.
I was about to go back to return to the comfort of my sleep when an abrupt knock at the door made me shoot up.
Adonis stirred slightly, trapping me with his leg, to bring me into him.
“Who is that?” I whispered lightly.
“Ignore it, little one,” he muttered. “Back to sleep. It can’t be time for us to rise.”
“Maybe it’s important. We should see who it is.”
“Nothing more important than this…,” he said, his hand snaking down my waist, inching toward—

They knocked again, even louder and more insistent this time. Adonis growled and sat up, looking especially handsome with his tousled, bedhead hair.
Throwing on a pair of jeans, he stormed toward the door, annoyed we were being interrupted in our cozy den.
“What the hell do you want?” he roared, opening the door without even thinking who might be on the other side.
I peeked over, curling the blankets up around my neck.
Who could be banging on the door with such force early in the morning?
I saw Councilman Harrison standing in the doorway, looking even older and more disheveled than I remembered.
Adonis stepped forward, and Harrison faked a smile as he scanned him with contempt.
“I said...what do you want, Harrison?”
“Well…,” he said, his voice nasally. “The Council and I have been requesting a meeting with you for weeks now.”
“I’ve been busy,” Adonis grunted, shoving his hands into his pockets.
The councilman eyed me in bed, and I drew the covers up as high as possible. I didn’t want the old pervert glimpsing my nip or anything. It was bad enough he’d shown up at the door. “I can see that,” he said.
“I’ll get right to it, then. You’ve found your mate. I’m glad to see you are happy. But...the kingdom expects certain things, Your Majesty. You have royal duties, which I’m sure you’re aware of.”
“Like what?” Adonis said, echoing my thoughts, not taking his hands out of his pockets.
“Well, like a Mating Ceremony. If you don’t get mated in one week, we have no choice but to consider you unfit to rule. You’re aware of the ruling, are you not?”
My eyes opened wide.
Is he being serious?
One week?
“What the hell are you talking about?” Adonis roared. “I’m the damn king. I decide when I want to have my mating ceremony! How can you come here and place demands? You’re merely advisors to me, not the other way around!”
“No need to be upset, Your Majesty,” Harrison sneered. He handed him an old piece of paper, pointing to it.
“It’s all right there, written in Section 35 of the Royal Decree. Goodbye, Your Majesty. See you in one week.”
Adonis slammed the door in his face and turned to me, a look of worry spreading across his face.
One week?
One week to plan the mating ceremony of our dreams? One week to get all of my friends and family together?
Impossible, and sheer madness.
That’s when I knew we were royally screwed.
