DON’T BE SHY, they said.
They being the Diaz family, encouraging Cassie Diaz to be brave.
Stick to horses, they said.
They being Cassie’s brother and grandfather.
Grow up, they said.
Okay, maybe that last one was Cassie’s.
Cassie was twenty-nine, and for the first time in her life, she was getting on a bull in a rodeo competition. Her family was going to be very proud of her.
If Cassie survived this ride.
The bull she’d drawn was Tornado Tom, a blue-gray beast that had dumped more cowboys than had lasted eight seconds on his back. This end-of-July rodeo was his first go-round with a cowgirl. History was about to be made by both of them. And hopefully, she’d add to her footnote in history by winning a much-needed purse.
Cassie lowered herself on Tornado Tom’s broad, muscular back, and nodded toward the cowboy operating the gate.
