Chapter 2

DARREN

I spring awake and make a beeline for the bathroom. After a quick shower, I step into my walk-in closet and slip into my sleek black suit.

I give myself a once-over in the mirror, just as a knock echoes through my room. I know it’s Liam and Noah. “Come on in, guys.”

They burst into my room, suits on, caps and gowns in hand. We hustle out of my room and towards the front door. My mom’s voice rings out, “Be careful! See you on the stage.”

I find myself on stage, accepting my degree. I can feel the pride of my pack members and parents through our bond.

I’ve graduated at the top of my class, summa cum laude. They all cheer and whistle for me. The pack members are proud of their future alpha, beta, and gamma.

My mom, the luna, has a party planned for us at the pack house later that night. She’s over the moon that her only child is graduating from college.

If only she could convince me to take over as alpha now. But I’ve been given one more year to find my mate, and I’m confident I will.

The Moon Goddess won’t let me down. She knows I need a mate.

Post-graduation, my parents envelop me in a warm hug. Then, Liam’s little sister, Emily, tries to hug me. I sidestep her, and she ends up hugging Liam instead.

Emily is a sweet girl, but she’s not for me. I have a rule: I don’t sleep with pack members. I don’t want my mate dealing with any past flings.

Don’t misunderstand me. I’m not a virgin. But I only sleep with humans to pass the time. I’ve never had a girlfriend, just casual hookups.

Humans are oblivious to our existence, and I prefer it that way. If they knew, we’d be in danger from hunters and other threats.

Our college is a mix of humans and wolves, but wolves are the majority since it’s close to the pack. We let some humans attend to avoid raising suspicion.

Emily has two friends, Ava and Lily. Ava is Noah’s mate, and they’ve known since they were eighteen. That’s when we wolves can find our mates.

I’ve been searching for mine for about four years now. Emily has hinted at wanting to be my luna, but I’ve told her to wait for her mate.

I mind-link Liam to handle his sister as I see her trying to latch onto my arm again. Liam pulls her away and whispers something in her ear. She congratulates us on our graduation.

We all pile into my jeep and head back to the pack house. My mom has a grand party planned there. We step inside to see it decked out in pack colors: black and silver.

I head to my room and change out of my suit. I pull on some blue jeans and a black shirt—my go-to look, unless I’m in a meeting.

I plan to unwind and enjoy myself for the next few days before returning to work. I run a company, with Liam and Noah’s help.

We all have business degrees, but I inherited the company from my dad. It’s my pride and joy. It’s been a distraction from not finding my mate.

I’ve been waiting for my mate for what feels like forever, but I know she’s close. I can feel it.

I step outside into the backyard, where more decorations are set up, and the party is in full swing. Noah and Ava are tucked away in a corner, lost in each other.

Liam approaches with a pack girl clinging to his arm. I warn him that if he keeps sleeping with pack members, his mate will have a lot of women to contend with.

He shrugs me off and continues drinking. For werewolves, it takes a lot to get us drunk. We need a lot of were-liquor, and even then, it often doesn’t work if we’re high-ranking.

So, I settle for a few drinks, knowing I won’t get drunk.

I spot Emily heading my way, and I turn to find someone else to talk to. Liam is busy with a girl, and Noah is all over Ava.

Thankfully, the adults have left the party, and it’s mostly teenagers now. I decide to call it a night and head to bed.

Emily catches up to me, drink in hand. She looks like she might be drunk. She latches onto my arm and nearly topples over.

I steady her, and she suggests we toast to graduation. I raise my cup and clink it against hers.

The alcohol has me feeling a bit light-headed. I attempt to tally up the number of drinks I've had tonight, but the count eludes me.

Emily voices her need for assistance to get to her room. Ever the chivalrous one, I accompany her. We reach her room, and then, just like that, it's morning.
