My heart hammered in my chest.

They knocked again, even louder and more insistent this time. Adonis growled and sat up, looking especially handsome with his tousled, bedhead hair.
Throwing on a pair of jeans, he stormed toward the door, annoyed we were being interrupted in our cozy den.

I peeked over, curling the blankets up around my neck.

I saw Councilman Harrison standing in the doorway, looking even older and more disheveled than I remembered.
Adonis stepped forward, and Harrison faked a smile as he scanned him with contempt.
âI said... what do you want, Harrison?â
âWellâŚ,â he said, his voice nasally. âThe Council and I have been requesting a meeting with you for weeks now.â
âIâve been busy,â Adonis grunted, shoving his hands into his pockets.
The councilman eyed me in bed, and I drew the covers up as high as possible. I didnât want the old pervert glimpsing my nip or anything. It was bad enough heâd shown up at the door. âI can see that,â he said.
âIâll get right to it, then. Youâve found your mate. Iâm glad to see you are happy. But... the kingdom expects certain things, Your Majesty. You have royal duties, which Iâm sure youâre aware of.â
âLike what?â Adonis said, echoing my thoughts, not taking his hands out of his pockets.
âWell, like a Mating Ceremony. If you donât get mated in one week, we have no choice but to consider you unfit to rule. Youâre aware of the ruling, are you not?â
My eyes opened wide.
Is he being serious?
One week?
âWhat the hell are you talking about?â Adonis roared. âIâm the damn king. I decide when I want to have my mating ceremony! How can you come here and place demands? Youâre merely advisors to me, not the other way around!â
âNo need to be upset, Your Majesty,â Harrison sneered. He handed him an old piece of paper, pointing to it.
âItâs all right there, written in Section 35 of the Royal Decree. Goodbye, Your Majesty. See you in one week.â
Adonis slammed the door in his face and turned to me, a look of worry spreading across his face.
One week?
One week to plan the mating ceremony of our dreams? One week to get all of my friends and family together?
Impossible, and sheer madness.
